Google’s Android is picking up market share at a more rapid pace than ever, with over 40% of new smartphone customers in the US choosing a handset with the Android OS installed. iOS and iPhone are still just leading the total market share stats, however it would appear to only be a matter of time before Android overtakes.
The trend shown in the graph above appears to be a very strong one. Can Android really start being the choice for over 50% of smartphone customers in the future? It would be an incredible achievement! My feeling is that it is entirely possible as more manufacturers release a wider range of handsets to suit all types of customer. 2011 is likely to be the year of the Android tablet as well, further increasing the penetration of the OS and further increasing its appeal to developers.
Is Apple content to be a niche player in a huge marketplace once again, as happened with the Mac computer? So far, it appears so.
